Automotive apprentices can be tasked to remove and re-insert car parts including those that are in the dirtiest sections of the vehicle. Basic repair work such as car dents and windshield wiper replacement are even assigned to automotive apprentices so that the auto mechanic may assess the employee's willingness to learn and innate passion for the craft.

There are companies that require a degree before they accept a person as an apprentice. For this situation, degrees in automotive mechanical, automotive management, and automotive retail, service, and repair are accepted. However, it is more common for apprentices to enter the job without prior experience. Since they will be learning alongside the veteran auto mechanic, automotive apprentices are requested to carefully understand the movements and fixes done by the mentor.
