Social workers who intend to focus on foster care work may find job opportunities in non-government welfare agencies and government offices. Foster care workers may also find job openings in schools and universities where they may work as counselors or teachers. On the other hand, foster care workers may choose to be self-employed and run their own agencies.

Responsibilities in Child Welfare - Foster Care Worker Jobs

The main responsibility of foster care workers is to help children and young people be provided their basic necessities such as decent homes, loving families, education, and health. Foster care workers may need to liaise with government agency administrators and foster parents to arrange a foster care system for young clients. Furthermore, foster care workers may need to hold counseling sessions with children and their families.

Other tasks of foster care workers include finding foster parents who will take in children temporarily or permanently. Another is liaising with placement agencies to discuss details of monetary provision and reimbursement for foster parents. A third task is to meet with lawyers to assist in legal cases young clients may be involved in. Another is to coordinate client therapies and treatment sessions with psychologists and other doctors.

Education and Skills Required in Child Welfare - Foster Care Worker Jobs

For entry-level foster care worker jobs, at least a bachelor's degree is required from social workers. A master's degree or doctoral degree, on the other hand, will help social workers eyeing higher positions. Courses that are helpful for foster care workers are social work, sociology, and psychology. Other courses are law and social service policy and administration.

Foster care workers must be willing to work on many cases and work for long hours. They must be willing to travel and interact with different types of people. Furthermore, foster care workers should be emotionally mature, patient and persevering as well as sympathetic to their clients' needs.
